JAHAZI AND JAZZ FESTIVAL

The Jahazi Literary and Jazz Festival in Zanzibar is a vibrant cultural event that combines literary activities with jazz performances. The festival, founded in 2011, aims to promote live music performances, introduce jazz to Zanzibar and East Africa, and facilitate collaborations between local and international artists. It features open-air jazz concerts, poetry readings, storytelling sessions, literary discussions, and cultural walks. The festival lineup includes renowned artists such as Kenyan trumpeter Christine Kamau, Danish pianist Morten Schantz, Cairo-born Jazz artist Fathy Salama, Danish artists Ida Nielsen and Carl Winther.

Christine Kamau is a multi-instrumentalist known for her saxophone skills and has performed at various festivals worldwide since releasing her debut album in 2012. Fathy Salama, an Egyptian jazz artist who won a Grammy Award for his work on the album “Egypt,” aims to raise the profile of jazz in Egypt through his music. Ida Nielsen’s music blends old school funk with elements of hip-hop, reggae, and world music. She played with Prince from 2010 and is currently working on her third album.

The festival not only celebrates jazz but also leans towards world music with touches of jazz. It provides a platform for local writers and musicians to engage with their international counterparts on an equal level. The event fosters creative collaborations and aims to give new direction to Taarab music while ensuring its continued survival for the next century.
